Undersea Cable Cuttings

Do you remember the internet outages that occurred a few months ago? Well after the event, the event is still alive in some places. Some people are investigating why that happened. Some people are now preparing alternative ways to avoid internet outage due to the cutting of the cables.

But why did I write an entry now? because I came across a screenshot I took of the messages that I sent to myself during this internet outage. The browsing and even the simplest form of internet the instant messaging took a tremendous hit. See the picture below, shows the duration between me sending the message and then receiving it. Going as high as 6 minutes and 16 seconds for the “zzup”.

Website hits

I was just sitting there.. pondering on the news that google has now indexed a Trillion pages. Talked about Here and Here. Then my thoughts crossed over to the websites hosting these pages. The unlimited number of .coms that are out there in the tubes.

I tried a few random strings with .com added to them. here are the results.

www.overandoveragain.com doesn't end anywhere..part of lyrics of a linkin park song.

Then i tried, auntytoldso.com hahaha i don't know where that came from but it is not there. Disappointed i thought about trying a single word. www.catalyst.com led to a software company website.

Have you ever tried this type of internet adventure? (no sending messages to the gmail email id you wanted does count as an adventure :P)

note: i have not been regular at blogging, a sign that my offline life is going very well and busy and occupied and happening and all that. will keep experimenting and posting.

Big Company, HR Policy

All netizens know very well that large IT companies have many wonderful, colorful and sometimes weird ways of keeping the camaraderie among its employees. It could wary from company to company but all of them have such programs, organized by the diligent HR department. Tours to exotic locations, cubicle decoration contents, weekly games, Network gaming (mostly RPG, FPS games) and such.

This concept really excites me, makes me feel it acts like a very good catalyst for the introverted uber geek developer to the bubbly ever-chatting marketing executive to get to know each other. Problem is, these events stay restricted to very large companies only. Events keep on shrinking based on your company's annual revenue. A big company will give gifts to all its employees on their birthdays, a small company will arrange a monthly cake cutting ceremony celebrating the birthdays of all the employees in that particular month, a smaller company will only celebrate the illustrious employees.

What I want to discuss here is: How does it work?

Does a company doing such exciting stuff with its employees become a major company? or

Does only a major company do such exciting stuff? or

It could be neither.

Even smallest of the small companies celebrate birthdays due to the scale of their operations. What pains me most is that the run of the mill middle level companies that are running on budget don't seem to be able to direct time, money and effort in this direction.

How important is boosting employee morale through such gatherings? Is it worth the investment?

If yes, what could be the ways a really reluctant company spend the least amount of money and time to get the benefits of these events?

After the event!!

Many people get wiser "after the event".

Recently with relation to my work, I found that once you have submitted your work and there is nothing else you can do to work on it and improve (read: the arrow shot cannot be reclaimed) you get ideas!

Ideas and shortcomings!!!

You get ideas of how you could have improved. This is alright, as this improvement idea can be implemented next time round.

But shortcomings!! You might have missed something which would have made a difference. These things don't leave you after work. They gnaw at your brain. They don't let you sleep.

A friend of mine, used to lose his sleep, in tension of not having done something right. Even I have had my share of sleepless nights where my thoughts ate into my brain.

Insurance is another place you get wise after the event. You take some stupid plan that the insurance guy sells you. When the time comes for you to reclaim your insured amount you are faced with a barrage of paperwork, legalities and litigation. In the end you land up with nothing. For all the trust you put in the Insurance company all you get is zilch. More so in personal injury claims.

Anyway, coming to the past, my dad used to call me and my sister "Wise after the event!!" a sort of response one would give when realization dawns about the answer that one had already known.

Example? A quiz maybe... when the quiz master pronounces the correct answer, you snap your fingers and say "I knew it!!" But the horse has already bolted, my dear!!

I got hold of the "Wise After The Event" thing and would tease my friends by calling them "W.A.T.E.!!" (waa tay) whenever they acted wise after the event.

I should start making effort and become WBTE (doesn't have a proper acronym) in order to avoid further damage to ... whatever!!

Where am I?

I have noticed lately that I am not getting enough time to sit down and write some blogs.

Work occupies a lot of time. Family comes next. Then myself (sleep). These three things are keeping me away from writing all my deep thoughts down on the blog.

As a result, my blog has diversified. Diversification into easier things.

He Haw Haw Blog: I can easily add to this blog without much effort. And it is a great place to chill out and read some jokes.

(Future) Islam Blog: This might be time consuming. I might target about two posts per month on this blog as it requires credible research and review by knowledgeable people. I can't just put it out there. Also depends about the number of queries my friends put to me.

This post is the result of the question I have put myself. Where am I?

I am in Hyderabad, technically speaking, but with respect to the blog, I like where I am heading. Change is good, and having to work with different things is even better.

Hope all these efforts bear fruit, in terms of comments, site hits and etc.

For people new to my blog: you can browse the archive, or search the site with Google.
For people who want to send in jokes on hehawhaw: Mail them to me and search hehawhaw before you send in jokes to avoid repetition

Islam Blog Name Suggestions

I am happy to inform you people that the poll results for the Islamic Blog came out positive for a Islamic Blog.

Now to assign a name for the blog, I'd like a few suggestions from you people. These suggestions I will use as a guideline to select whatever is available.

Please do add your inputs in comments
